Apple’s latest software update, iOS 26, introduces new features designed to help iPhone users manage unwanted calls and text messages. While these tools can enhance customer experience by reducing spam, they may also affect how important communication, such as library notifications, are received.
Below is an overview of the changes and how they may impact on your library’s MessageBee communications.
Call Screening for Unknown Numbers
When someone calls from a number not saved in the recipient’s contacts, the iPhone can now automatically answer and request that the caller state their name and reason for calling. The recipient then chooses whether to accept or decline the call. Calls from your organization may not ring through right away unless the patron has your number saved.
Screen Unknown Senders
Text messages from unsaved numbers are placed in a separate “Unknown Senders” inbox. Notifications are silenced until the user marks the sender as “known.” This means patrons who haven’t saved your number may not see your messages right away.
Spam/Junk Folder for SMS
Apple’s enhanced spam detection routes suspicious or promotional texts into a junk folder. While this helps reduce unwanted messages, legitimate bulk or automated notifications, such as library reminders, could be miscategorized.
Improved User Controls
Users can now more easily manage sender status, moving numbers between “unknown,” “known,” and “blocked.” Once your library number is marked as trusted, messages and calls will appear as expected. Until then, visibility may be reduced.
What This Means for Your Communications:
Encourage Patrons to Save Your Number(s): This ensures calls and texts appear in their main inbox and ring through as intended.
Set Expectations: Remind patrons they may need to check their “Unknown Senders” tab if they don’t see your messages.
Clarity Matters: Make sure your notifications identify your library at the start of each message, so recipients recognize the sender right away. Thank you for being a valued part of the MessageBee community!
